Microsoft on Tuesday released the LifeCam, a new webcam that supports 1080p high-definition video.
The LifeCam is Microsoft’s first webcam with a 1080p sensor, which is twice the size of 720p sensors on the market, Microsoft said. It includes a 360-degree view range, so users don’t have to pick up or move their laptops to get a view of the entire room. The elongated hood, meanwhile, was modeled after a high-end camera to help protect the lens from stray light, Microsoft said.

Though the LifeCam supports 1080p, Microsoft cautioned that popular video-calling services like Skype only support 720p. To activate 1080p HD recording, users will need commerical video software that’s not included, an Intel Quad Core 3.0 GHz or higher, and 4GB of RAM. The enclosed software supports 720p HD video recording, Microsoft said.
Microsoft noted that the LifeCam will complement Windows Live Messenger 2011, which will support HD video calling when it is released this fall.
The LifeCam will be sold exclusively at Best Buy later this month for $99.95, and is available on BestBuy.com starting Tuesday.
