Microsoft is demoing some cool prototypes on this year’s annual Research Event TechFest 2010.
Let’s have a sneak peak at the Top Three ones.
The first one, Mobile Surface, was made public but later pulled offline, but its still available in the cache:
1. Mobile Surface:
Microsoft finally realized the concept of surface needs to be mobile, The Microsoft surface experience is now ported to support 3D interaction with mobile devices. Microsoft intends on changing any surface to Mobile Surface with a mobile device and a camera-projector system. In general, Microsoft is working on NUI ( Natural user interface) technology . It probably has its roots in the Microsoft Research “PlayAnywhere” project on which developers have been working since some time before 2007. (PlayTable, which is related to PlayAnywhere, evolved to become Microsoft’s Surface.)
2. Project Gustav: Immersive Digital Paintinggustav
“Project Gustav,” is an “immersive digital painting” research project. It achieves interactivity and realism by leveraging the computing power of modern GPUs, taking full advantage of multitouch and tablet input technology and our novel natural media-modeling and brush-simulation algorithms.
“The natural interface makes Project Gustav ideal for hobbyists and professional artists alike. Project Gustav achieves a high level of interactivity and realism by leveraging the computing power of modern GPUs, taking full advantage of multitouch and tablet input technology and our novel, natural media-modeling and brush-simulation algorithms.”
3. RealTime Phone Conversation Translation
Adding to the Coolness, Microsoft demonstrates “Realtime Phone Conversation” that translates any popular language to English while on the talk.
Looks impressive, the level of accuracy is decent though there is a lag of 2-4 seconds, caused by translation engine + TTS engine delays.
